Afox Insaka on prospects on just transitions in Africa
Recent geopolitical challenges provide a challenging backdrop as countries meet in Egypt mid-November 2022 for the annual UN climate change conference. A critical issue that will define the negotiations is the Just Transition - deciding how countries can transition to low-carbon and climate-resilient societies in a just manner. African countries find themselves at the heart of the debate as they try to balance rapid economic transformation and ambitious climate action. How, then, can Africa realise the Just Transition?
Join our next Insaka on Friday, 02 December 2022, 1700-18:30 Hrs UK time, to hear from distinguished policymakers from Africa’s premier institutions who will address this question:
- Pamla Gopaul, Director, Policy Bridge Tank, African Union Development Agency (AUDA-NEPAD)
- Pamela Levira, Policy Officer, Climate Change, African Union Commission
- Dr Jessica Omukuti , Research Fellow on Inclusive Net Zero for the Oxford Net Zero Initiative, Institute of Science Innovation and Technology (InSIS).
The insaka will be live-streamed on YouTube, and we encourage you to send in your questions via the YouTube chat box.

Realising the Just Transition in Africa
African countries have contributed the least to global climate change yet suffer from its disproportionate impacts. How can African countries reconcile the twin policy challenges of economic transformation and ambitious climate action? In this talk, Ms Pamela Levira will discuss how African countries coordinate their policies to ensure a Just Transition for the continent.
Research and policy support for sustainable development in Africa
African countries launched an ambitious policy transformation project across the continent by adopting the landmark African Union Agenda 2063. Given the complex nature of the continent's challenges, research is indispensable in responding to the challenges. As the inaugural Director of the AUDA-NEPAD Policy Bridge Tank, Ms Pamla Gopaul will reflect on the role of research in general, and think tanks in particular, in supporting Africa’s long-term sustainable development policies.
